Recollections

"In 1970, while in my second year at Canterbury College of Art, I decided to write my History of Art (finals) thesis on bird illustration. My research introduced me to some of the biggest names in avian art and laid the foundations for my later life as a printmaker and member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA).

This self-published edition reproduces my interviews with great artists who are sadly no longer with us, and pays tribute to their talent and achievements".

With the sad loss of Robert Gillmor (MBE) in 2022 all those artists originally contacted by the author have now passed on, ending a particularly influential era of wildlife art. The author has chosen to reproduce the 1971 thesis in its entirety as well as personal recollections and the contents of letters. Submitted with the original thesis were amateur photographic transparencies provided for illustration and these have been scanned and reproduced to accompany the text.
