Scraperboard

Scraperboard is thin quality card or board coated with chalk and covered with a surface of black india ink while scratchboard is thin MDF coated in the same way.

Using either material involves working in negative where the darks are left untouched. (In painting it is usual too leave the light areas.) I don't pre-draw my design onto scratchboard as it can affect the surface of the ink but that leaves very little room for error!

Having scratched my design into the scratchboard using a stylus tool I like to tint the revealed white chalk with layers of watercolour.
