Silk Painting

"Cyclamen"

"Summer swifts"

To paint on silk it is necessary to first stretch the material onto a frame, similar to stretching a canvas. An outliner, called gutta, is used on the silk to keep the paint in a certain area. Gutta comes in a variety of colours, is applied first and when it is dry the silk colours are added.

Silk paints are vibrant, are easily overlaid and interesting textures/results can also be created by using salt or an anti-spread wash. I do not pre-draw my design with a pencil preferring, instead, to draw the gutta straight onto the silk. This allows for a greater deal of freedom and by not 'enclosing' areas completely colours spill out and overlap adding vibrancy and spontaneity to the finished painting.
